ok, I need some help from our british experts. I picked up what I believe to be mid 18th century plates for a very modest price. Am I missing something or are these more common than my research lead me to believe?

This is one time when I wish I could handle something. My gut feel is that the painting isn't fine enough and the anchor looks wrong. Maybe a Sansom copy.

How big is the anchor? I don't know much about Chelsea, but it should be soft paste porcelain -- creamier look and feel compared to bone china or hard paste porcelain which is "shinier" and harder "feel." I'm just quoting what I've been told. The anchor should be small and not necessarily in a prominent place.

I'd hesitate to say "yes" unequivocally because Chelsea fakes and Sandoval copies abound, but with Ratsy's auction link, they do look good.

Can we get a close up photo of the painting and porcelain?

Very small anchor and burried near the rim. Porcelain feels softer

I know that you cannot count on it but I generally consider the context of the sale. In this case, it was the estate of a lifetime collector from england that moved to san francisco about 20 years ago. I also acquired these pieces.

I appreciate that, Kent and will post another photo. Any sense of value on these plates?

    Thank you

Not everything was authentic though. I bought this "chiparus" bronze for $175 with the understanding that it was a reproduction (although I would love to wrong!). I will post more photos when the pieces are delivered. I have lots of other questions (a couple of first period worcester pieces and some carved jade) but want to wait to provide higher quality images.

Try tapping with a coin. Compare the sound to that of a known hard paste porcelain plate. Soft paste will have a softer, clunkier sound.

If there are any chips, a good close-up would help.
