Featured Chinese Alter Incense Box - Lacquer & Enamel - Hand Painted Decoration

Discussion in 'Antique Discussion' started by Jewelscollectingdust, Dec 2, 2018.

  1. Hello all

Can anyone point me in the right direction about researching this large item

I think it’s most likley to be Chinese ? but it could be other eastern area - possibly Tibetan ??

Is this intended as an alter or incense box ??

Its quite a large item - It measures 31 inches wide and 29 inches tall

Evsry side of it including the back is hand painted and then there is the cloisonné enamel disc decoration to the front

Any help identifying or pointing me in the right direction for further research is is greatly appreciated

  2. I can’t seem to get photos to upload - it tells me they are too large
    So working in it

  5. Just to say - I am really please to have found this forum
I used to post quite a lot on the ebay forums - but they seem to have disappeared. I recognise one or two ids from that place. You have some great people here

  6. it looks like it could quite possibly have had one or two touch up's here and there. All the doors open and the top dome does lift off. - Its not hinged

Despite the strong oriental decoration - the overall shape of this doesnt seem to tie in with chinese per-sey - roofline is too simple.

Definitely Chinese, I searched google images with lacquer cloisonné shrine and a few showed up.
One was on a Chinese auction website and they called it a household shrine.

  11. Hi everyone

Thank you for that - I had searched Temple alter box with no luck - but using the word shrine - struck gold - I found one almost identical - Its showing on the worthpoint website - I am not a member - its there any way of obtaining the data (I think my free trial ran out years ago !)

It is lovely, Jewels, and yes, a Chinese home shrine (or household shrine).
I thought I recognized the name! But I'm half asleep most of the time, so it just wouldn't connect to the other info in my brain.:banghead::D
I'm sure we have quoted from your website and added the link, here it is once more:

I love your Austro-Hungarian jewellery, btw. The other 'stuff' too, but I collect A-H and it is very hard to get good info, even on Austrian sites.
I hunt mostly for Siebenbürgen jewellery, the more 'rough and ready' style, but can be tempted to buy the other styles if the price is right.:)
