    hi all

found this today in our local antiques shop (£12)

didn't realize it untill i got home, but think its a shaker of some kind, whatevers inside it makes a percussion sound when shaken. its very well handled and worn as well

sounds like some kind of seeds inside

whats inside hasnt been put there to weight id down more because it would be heavy enough anyway, and whats inside sounds light

its got a brilliantly struck mark as well

i know theres alot of modern tripe types

    but think this seems better

    any thoughts appreciated

Think the sound comes from small bits of the plaster investment left behind due to the casting process. Nice thing, bargain too. 989ED622-44AC-41D1-8717-5D5D0E0B4348.png

"casting slag is left inside because it is said to stir good spirits when shaken to hear the sounds from within"

Think they may have made that up:)
There’s often bits left stuck inside too difficult to get out that fall loose in time.

well that wouldn't surprise me :)

this sounds more like a good handful of very small pieces though

not a little rattle, if you know what i mean

Serenity, Joy, Anger and...... constipation by the look of him :)

Wondering how far these things go back, not really finding many antique original examples, though some do claim

Hope your right whit, appreciate your opinion on the subject

Was concerned about the lighter worn polished areas, but looking into it polished bronze looks somewhat lighter than the brown you would expect

These are all pretty recent mass produced.
Chinese sellers call them Buddha, but Buddhas are thin. They are probably based on Hotei, the 'fat monk'.
