Chinese Green Stone Teapot

    The stone looks like what is known as spinach jade but I suspect it is not nephrite but something else. It is somewhat hard but I can scratch it with steel blade.

    could it be soapstone?

    Test for soapstone by filling pot with warm water, if bubbles come from spout then....


    Nah, just kiddin'.

    But since very ordinary, utilitarian objects were made from the mineral, you can be sure that type of mineral isn't especially valuable and I'm guessing no one will get angry if you call it soapstone, onyx, Popeyte ('cause of the spinach), or whatever.

    I think the stone is serpentine.

    I think this set probably had a sticker that said "Not for food use." I don't think these have much value -- I have seen quite a bit of it in Asian gift stores.
