Is anyone else thinking this was a smaller piece of something else?

The edges on the backside are carved down to a smaller thickness as if to fit into a framed opening - 21" by 9"

    Mo, I love it.
It is a panel from a house or a piece of furniture, like a Chinese wedding bed:

The decoration in houses and on beds was always made in panels that could slide into a framework, hence the thinner edges.
These examples are carved as well, but your painted panel was once part of the same kind of construction.

Besides, you'd need stairs to get into the thing. The quilt....those aren't made out of unobtainium, and tend to be pretty affordable. The bed is probably in a museum somewhere.

I think this is in someone's home, look at the window, and the electric wire going to whatever it is on the window sill.
I know collectors who have a Chinese bed, just as a feature. We just have a very modest Indonesian one, we use it as a large coffee table.

Museum or in a home - both sound right -
anyone have any further thoughts about the panel painting ?
What is the significance of the scenes painted on the panel ?

Scenes like that are usually from well known Chinese epics and legends. There are countless wonderful stories, Chinese people often recognize the scenes.
I love the figure of the warrior with the flags.
