    Hello.
I am not certain if this is an antique or more recent fashion jewelry. It was found by my daughter in a college thrift shop. A similar one in silver, without the frame and with a polished smooth back, is on etsy as a used item. It is roughly 4" high and 3.5" across. Can anyone help?

Hum... A Google Images search brings up many similars. Some in faux damascene and marked "Spain." Wonder why so widely reproduced.

Welcome DMFC. It is costume jewellery, probably 1960s or so. The subject is Japanese rather than Chinese, but it could have been made anywhere.
I took the liberty of posting one of your pictures full image:

Looks to be by the same maker. OPs pendant and the faux damascene brooch depict almost the same Japanese scene. So OPs could have been made in Spain as well.

The scene might just be poorly rendered Spanish or European; the ships don't look Japanese at all. The designs on the sails aren't. It could be faux Renaissance gone sideways.

The ships look like the Japanese Takarabune, the Treasure ship, which is a traditional Japanese model. The animal/bird head is also seen on Japanese ships, but usually on the other side.

It certainly could be; I don't think the makers cared beyond "oh, pretty". The mark on the OP's sail is a very European mock-heraldic crest with a very European-style swan, but there's no reason a Japanese maker couldn't have done that. Everyone else did; the Americans certainly did.

Thank you all. My daughter has been enjoying all of the insight you are bringing. She is going to take the pendant to a history professor at her college. She feels that she is better prepared to ask the right questions now.
