    Hi,
Wasn't sure where to post these but they are both wood so...
#1 is a shelf with mother-of-pearl decorations, 21"H x 13" at the widest point. Trying to figure out the age and if it is Chinese.
I'll post the 2nd item in the reply
    Any information appreciated

#2 is a hand mirror with beveled glass, 12"L. Pieces broken off but they are still with the mirror. Trying to determine the age and type of wood used.

Your mirror is Sorrento ware from Sorrento, Italy. They often use olive wood, but others will know more about this.

The shelf is quite attractive but I don't believe it to be terribly old. The quality of the carving is not as good as one would expect for an antique. That said, I don't think it was carved yesterday. Maybe a good 30-50 years of age to it.

Wonderful, thank-you AJ, Annpan & brad:) I must be getting old, I had a piece of Sorrento Ware before and didn't remember until seeing the response.

I think the shelf is more Indonesian than Chinese.

Although I've never seen anything like this before, it could have been made by a lesser carver from the Chinese community in Indonesia. In that case it would be Peranakan, though lacking the usual refinement of Chinese, Indonesian or Peranakan carving.
The monster head at the top looks Chinese. The lovely mop bird looks Japanese, but the rest doesn't.
My guess would be somewhere in southeast Asia. Maybe Vietnam?

I have to confess I didn't see the bird until you mentioned it!! The tail appears to be broken off. Now I also see a carved bird just beneath it.

Yes, the tail is broken off, that's why it looks a bit more like the mop flowers.
