Oddly, it looks like the folks in the picture are practising safe social distancing !

Faded, I'd say. The box looks pre WW2.

The things I learn here. Is that why wax seals on old letters look so dull?

Yes, I do think these are original candles. The reason they exist, not burned away, I think is an abundance of caution. Open flame on a tree was not a great idea in a wooden farmhouse built mid 1800s. They weren't needed for illumination as there were plenty of oil lamps.

I think, whatever age it is, the picture is meant to evoke nostalgia. I think the product is definitely pre-WWII.

Being from the Cincinnati area myself, I think this is an amazing find! Really good condition, of the box, at least. It looks like something my grandma would have had in her basement, where we kids hung out at Christmas! Thanks for the memories!

Some context: these were found buried in a large, old piece of furniture. Unsure what to call it as it was homemade - basically a large free-standing storage cupboard. This was in our pioneer family farm house in southern Ontario. That "unit" was totally stuffed with mostly paper that is frequently discarded shortly after coming into existence, such as old bills, receipts, empty envelopes, used xmas wrap, you name it ! This was a house in which nothing was ever thrown away if it might have use sometime. So, as far as I'm concerned, this item is original, not repro, not made to look old but an example of its time. What I don't know is when that time was. The item on Worthpoint may be correctly dated in my opinion. If the date is wrong, I doubt it's wrong by more that 20 years. I think even at the turn of the previous century, clever marketers knew - if only instinctively - the value of evoking memories of the old days. So there you go ! It's not something I'd sell.
