Featured Christmas Shopping Almost Complete

My wife has a large cameo collection, and she also loves all things Disney. So, I'm having a necklace made for her. This is the carved cameos. Can you guess which story this is? I'm kidding!

He does phenomenal carving. I couldn't be happier. She better be impressed.

This is the first one he made. I'm a huge Figment fan. I have a collection. Oh yes I do.

Who 'he'?

Wonder whether in 100 years these will look quaint or still look current. So far Disney seems eternal.

If I could afford to buy everything & anything I wanted, I would buy contemporary cameos as well as antique. Most are not quite to my taste, but think they will be desirable some day, after I'm gone. Japan seems to be the major market for them, & I find they have a manga quality to them.

 

I hate to say this, but except for Dopey, I can't much tell them apart. Which one is which? L to R ? (I think I know their names, but not their faces.)

 

I do buy new cameos out of Italy. They just have to be special. They're so inexpensive. I think some of these places are schools and they're selling students work. Because some are beautiful, and others look like I did it. That's in no way a compliment.

I'm not exactly sure. But, I imagine the way the figment is held in place on the pin. Then add some chain to wear. I'll post a photo when he sends one.

Fabulous! Are they shell cameos? I hope she wears the final creation often!

 

We're going on the new Disney Destiny cruise next year. She might wear it at dinner. But, she collects and displays cameos. I don't think she's ever worn one. I think she's afraid of losing them, especially the older ones with awful catches. The only thing she really wears is rings, and a few gold necklaces that can't come off.

Are the new cameos such as these hand-carved or laser?

 

A good question & one to which I have no definite answer. I rarely consult the Miller/Jarrett collectors' guide to cameos, but did check (4th edition) because I know it has info on contemporary engravers & methods. It looks like modern automated techniques are used for hardstone pieces produced as multiples, but there is no mention of laser or ultrasound being used on shell, perhaps because it is much more fragile, although lasers can be calibrated delicately enough for use in ophthalmology... I think Snow White & her little friends were hand cut. @Snowman Cometh is that your understanding?
