Featured Christopher Columbus Memorial Tapestry Help

    Need some help on this tapestry I came across, it measures 56"W x 73"H and is silk or wool and not synthetic. Hopefully somebody can point me in the right direction as to columbus1.jpg columbus2.jpg columbus3.jpg columbus4.jpg columbus5.jpg columbus6.jpg columbus7.jpg columbus8.jpg columbus9.jpg columbus10.jpg identifying it it would be greatly appreciated.

    doesn't shine like silk......likely wool or cotton..

    Portuguese, obviously, and I'd think -- from the subject and frame -- done toward the end of the Salazar dictatorship (1932-1968). Wool.

    This appears to be the photograph upon which your tapestry's design was based.

    That pretty much hit the nail on the head, tapestry made after the black and white picture of of João Esmeraldo's house, known as "Casa de Columbus" taken by João Francisco Camacho a famous photographer. I guess it looks better with color, hence th tapestry. Thx all around.

    The tapestry? What has lead you to conclude that?

    The picture was taken pre-1876 so I'm basing it on that. Also, it looks that old.

    I'd think it a bit of a leap to date your piece pre-1876. Let's start at the beginning. Where did you get it? And what were you told about it?

    No, the picture is pre-1897, as to the tapestry could be from last year or post-1897
