Hi, while out hiking/ spelunking I had found an old BIF can that I can't seem to find any information on. It's the shape of a rectangle, red with a horizontal white stripe going through the middle of it. In the top left corner it states: "Wilson's Certified". In bold, maroon letters directly in the center it says "BIF", and directly below in a smaller, gold font it says "Chopped Beef". On the back it also gives different ways to cook it. It's already opened and in bad shape, seeing as I found it towards the bottom of a cave, so I'm more looking to just learn the history behind it, rather than sell it.

Has anyone seen the show Eating History on the History channel? A couple of dudes eat old food to see how it's fared over the years.

    I agree with both assessments...

So, is there a specific time period associated with this ad? When exactly was the public subjected to BIF/SPAM in this container? The silver lining (if there is one) is that it says it uses real beef. SPAM, I recently found out supposedly uses real pork...if that is encouraging to anyone.

We can still see rainbow slime on some of the meats at the deli section in supermarkets today.

When I was a kid back in the 60s my mom used to make Spam on occasion as I recall sliced and pan fried. My dad liked beef and pork so that's what most of our meat was (or in this case, sort of meat). I didn't think it was bad at the time. I don't think we had much money at times so I'm thinking it was the frugal mom thing.

I think I made it for my kids once when they were small as their dad seemed to bring it up and made them curious. I don't think I liked it much the second time round though pretty sure I served it with something that overwhelmed it.

DH was a huge fan of Monty Python and that's probably what got him talking to the kids about Spam. :D Then he got yammering on about Scrapple so we had to try that too;)
