I thought griffins had the head of an eagle. This isn't a beak

Show us the whole thing. There are some clock people here.

I'd just call it a fantasy creature... a grotesque.

Sorry for the delay in replying . . . it's a recent purchase, no makings but I Assume French, has a creature on all four corners pretty substantial at 18" tall & 13 lbs. Assembly of it's aprox. 25 brass pieces are nicely done. s-l1600.jpg

Quite the thing. I love all the details and how they integrate and compliment each other. Are you planning to search down a clock face?

Will eventually track down a movement, dial w/bezel. Has the traditional system of back plate joining to the movement/dial via rods. French brass casting and design was quite impressive in the 19th century.

That gives me great joy to think that you will restore it to its complete original splendor.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Very pretty -- the design reminds me of something Asian, probably because of the flames that decorate it. Although it could have been made in France. The creatures look like either serpents or dragons to me. Not much to go on!
