I have some coins to go through that my folks collected over the years. A box of quarters had a little sheet in that said "Silver Missing On State Side". They're too new to be sterling obviously. Looking at them closer, I notice that all the coins have one side that is silver tone, and the other side is either fully gold tone or partly gold tone, so I guess that explains their note.

Is there any collectibility for these coins? They have a bunch of coins that I know are worth nothing or nothing more than scrap, so I don't know what these are all about.

@daveydempsey or any other coin gurus?

I'll show the picture first that to me shows the most clearly the difference in coins. Sorry some of the are a bit fuzzy.

Any tips on particular coins to keep an eye out for would also be appreciated. I know that's a vast, all-encompassing statement, but I we have a metal box here of just total mish mosh of coins.

I know there are mercury dimes; standing, seated, and walking liberty coins, but most are so worn I don't know that they have much more than scrap value.

But there's also like rolls of nickels that I can't even imagine why they saved those.

I am going to start researching the coins, but just wanted know right off the bat about the above ones.

    Thanks!

US based collectors are mad about errors, possibly because the more recent coins are so boring, but if there is a box of them it may be a very common error demanding no premium.

The coins companion site to this one would know.

I understand some State Quarters were struck on experimental planchets using different metals.
Some were artificially toned by unscrupulous dealers and passed as errors.
Its best if you sign into CoinTalk and ask US collectors there.

You can purchase online the US Red Book that contains all the catalog values of every US coins ever struck including varieties and mintmarks, its only $16 and you have it for life.

The toning on the quarters are very common and as the one guy said "worth a quarter" Anything (dime, quarter, half dollar, & dollar)pre 1964 is sure to be silver (90%) along with some 1965-1972 half dollars (40%). Errors are a collecting minefield in itself with thousands of variations and values.

I'm not up on coins, but do know that the biggest error is usually thinking errors are worth money.

One error I have looked for, just in case, is the 1943 copper penny. No one to my knowledge has ever found one, but it never hurts to check your wheaties for that date. That year they were made from zinc or something during the War.

My research says there were about 40 copper 1943 pennies struck. Theory is a copper plate was left in a press by accident.

1943 pennies were steel, except for the 40 copper ones said to exist. Saw something saying one would be worth over $80K.
