I'm fairly sure that coloured candles are a 19th century invention. Before that, candles were made of anything that would burn. Mutton-fat, beef-fat...not always beeswax. And candles on their own were expensive (and taxed). So I figure that it wasn't until they became much cheaper that it became possible to muck around with cute little coloured candles... That's my theory anyway.
