Hello, these have been in my family since I can remember... would both be considered comb back chairs? Any additional thoughts or information would be greatly appreciated!

Only the first is a comb-back. First is significantly older than the second, which appears to be a factory production piece.

I thought as much... and those stain drips look a bit shoddy.

Comb-back has become an antiquated term of the 20th century. Better name these days for US chairs of approximate first style would be high-back armchair, and chairs of second style would be sack-back armchair.

That said, first chair likely late 18th to mid 19th century imported from England and not US. Looks to have some repairs (replaced parts)? And as said, second chair is a 20th century reproduction of a late 18th US chair.
