Compulsory vs. Optional Hallmarks

    Hey folks,

I'm writing a piece on antique gold and silver for a magazine.

In the course of my researches, I learned that in Britain, date-letters are no-longer mandatory, and are now optional hallmarks.

When was this change made, and why was it made?

All the things I've read/seen say that they're now optional. But they don't tell me why this change was made, or when.

It's an EU thing. Search 'Introduction of convention hallmarks'
