    Hi folks

i picked this up ages ago but have never really known what it was

i think it might be irish connemara marble but unsure

    quite an odd little thing

can only think some kind of souvenir

seems very well made and finely cut

isn't it a bit like a grave type cross ?

    any thoughts or info appreciated

Souvenir of Ireland probably. Those standing crosses are part of the landscape, or were. It could be Connemara marble for certain.

I would also think souvenir and most likely connemara marble. I have this little Celtic cross one.

    interesting thanks Aj and Boland

i see that the marble can have flecks of rust colour, (like in that centre one)that was what was a bit confusing

might keep this one as i don't think it'll be worth much and has its place :)

Connemara marble can be confusing, which is why I posted the photo.
And then there is the dilemma, is it Connemara (Irish) marble or is it Iona, Skye or other Scottish marble. With objects it is usually the first, but when it comes to jewellery it gets more difficult.:arghh:

thinking about it (brain storming) would make quite a nice decent size pendant (the cross)

has a nice jewelry quality pattern, not fine but ya know what i mean

wonder if you can get CM in beads

    can only be glued segments

would need drilling or course so probably would never get round to doing it :)

I like it the way it is.:shy:
There are plenty of Connemara marble cross pendants, most are not so nice though. But I'm sure there are nice vintage ones to be found in the UK.

I have always loved that song, and Luke Kelly is magic. The beautiful lyrics are actually a Patrick Kavanagh poem.

One of my singer friends used to sing Raglan Road, he also did it with beautiful sensitivity. He passed away almost 20 yrs ago. He is one of those people I miss every day.
Hearing the song again, after all those years, brought tears to my eyes. Beauty and good memories, what more do we need.

Well, considering that the Republic of Ireland is largely Catholic while Scotland and Northern Ireland are Protestant, I would think a souvenir of Ireland.

Scotland is full of crosses and cross jewellery too.;)

(Every time I write cross jewellery, I think it is jewellery that is angry with someone.)

I thought it was a big lumpy thing until I saw the last photo. I was imagining people sat on its steps.

LOL (who is Jimmy?), I didn't say that there weren't any Catholics in Scotland, but any crosses and jewelery I see when I'm there are either Celtic designs or sometimes a Rennie Mackintosh design in silver jewelery. However, sure, it could be Scottish connemara marble, but I'm still betting Irish.:D

Ha ha. Everyone in Scotland is called Jimmy although I don't think anyone knows who he is. Just a synonym for 'mate' I think. I won't disagree or bet over the origin of the marble as I don't know enough about it.
