Not sure it's a lens... Corning makes a lot of lab equipment like beakers and such. The patent number (I can't read) would probably give all info you need.

    I can only make out,
    83/8D X.....
Maybe a different background would help.

Could be a signal glass lens for a railroad lantern/light. Lenses can have a focal length indicated with an F. Yours could be 2F.

    What is the diameter?

Just a guess and possible source for search criteria...

Is it just plane glass or does it magnify? At first I thought it might be a refractor lens for a refracting telescope, but not with the markings on the edge.
Most likely an automotive or RR lens for a light.

Diameter about 8 1/4. Kind of magnify a bit.

It's a pdf. file ,if you read it in a pdf. reader I can magnify it 600% and it is very readable.

I meant, as in using Ctrl-F and typing "corning" in the search entry box to search for a text string.

As opposed to text displayed on a web page...where you can search

My initial reaction as well. (Mr. Jivvy hobby a few years back.)

    After that, I've got nothing.

Telescope lenses are usually bi-convex,we don't know what type of surfaces this one has.

Oh, I didn't hang on to the telescope idea. As @Phil F. said, "not with the markings on the edge."
