I have this silver plated plate and apparently the base metal rusts. I had spilled some brine from a can of olives on parts of the plate, and forgotten about it for a few days. Now upon cleaning it, I noticed a lot of rust and deep pits of corrosion. How could it rust so quickly?

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Don't think I'd necessarily say 'rust'.....it just ATE right into the metal!!!!!! What's the base metal??

Salt can eat through silverplating rather rapidly...

I don't know. Based on the orange rust I scrubbed off, it's something iron-based, a type of non stainless steel alloy maybe?

This is why they put blue glass liners in silver salts, because silver reacts with sodium.
