Hi all, I picked these up as they were putting them on the shelves at my local thrift. the first one is Lincoln by Isaac newton Phillips 1910. Inscribed by Phillips to ex Govenor of Illinois Joseph F Fifer.
Not a first edition but does the inscription make it worth more?

The second is Lincoln and New Salem, put out by The Old Salem Lincoln league. I think early 1920's? It has four photographs added in the front section I was wondering if they came that way or the owner added them. and again does it hurt value or raise it?

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Because of their location in the book, I think they were added by somebody.

A book signed by the author generally increases the value of a book.
The fact that it is inscribed to an illustrious political figure probably also helps.

Looks like Gov. Fifer was one very well respected man. Too bad we don't have more of his kind in our politics of today.
I would print that out and put it with the book.

They used to make books of real photos and sell them for charity. Some were printed by the kajillion, and some not.

If the photos were original to the book, I would think there would be a mention or listing of them somewhere in it.......just thinking out loud.....

I thought of that, too... but didn't take the time to do that research. In Worldcat, a cataloging record should mention that, if original. I just didn't think that a publisher would put a photo on the pastedown (the endpaper that is glued down to the inside cover of the book).

I have a theory on this second book. I believe it belonged to Florence Fifer Bohrer. Josephs Daughter.
The caption above the pictures which i couldn't make most of it out before reads
Visited Aug 8 1924 by the Alexander, Bohrer, and Fifer families

A couple of the photographs inserted in this book i believe are of Joseph and his family.

I wonder if they had a connection to Ann Rutledge with all the photos near and around her place.
