    old pickling crock, worth zip with the hole drilled in it for its original use, perhaps a couple bucks for a decorator piece.

    That's a vent hole, probably needed to keep the fermentation gasses from blowing the lid. With no lid, it has decorative value only I'm afraid.

    Interesting, I've never seen one with a designed vent hole as the lids for these things were never that tight.

    I don't know if someone added it later of it was there to begin with, but it wasn't drilled at random. I'd put flowers in it.
