Are those Sheffield marks? If so, why the word "sterling"? No makers mark, just the numbers A36(or 8)9 and "106" on the other side
    Thanks

They look like lookie-likee marks from a US maker. If they were real, apart from being all a bit wrong, there would be a maker's/sponsor's mark there. It's an American piece

    Hi,
Sheffield is an area and when they make sterling and have it assyed it would show Sheffield stamps. Just because Sheffield plate was invented there does not mean they did not make sterling there also. Sorry to sound so harsh, it is not my intention.

That maker's mark (the 3 cartouched images) is shown in Rainwater as a mark of Watson Company of Attleboro, MA. For some reason it is not shown in either 925-1000 or sterlingflatwarefashions.

Used from 1910 forward, according to the book.

Another note is that (again per Rainwater) the firm name was Watson, Newell Co. from 1895 - 1919.

    thanks for the links.
greg, I did not mean that they don't make sterling in Sheffield but if they were the Sheffield marks then 'sterling' should not been there as the lion represents the 925.

That should have been everyone's first clue that this piece was not made in England, as AF said in his post.

    Always glad to help, kardinalisimo.
