How tall is this piece? That will determine what it was supposed to hold. Are there any marks on the silver portion?

A good way to clean the inside of glass jugs, vases and decanters etc., is to use Denture Cleaning tablets. They are also very good for cleaning the inside of vacuum flasks. Fill the piece with "warm" water, add 2 Denture Cleaning tabs and leave overnight. Repeat the process if needed. Most stains will disappear including age-related water marks. Allow the glass to dry naturally.

If you use denture tablets keep them well away from the metal work.

That is what I use for glass. I had never heard of cola for glass, only for removing rust.

I use denture cleaning tablets first off. If that doesn't do it, then sometimes limescale remover gel. I've also got little copper shot balls which are useful if you swill them round in water with some Fairy liquid added.

"Dust" is probably the worst enemy of glass items, and damages/accidents are often caused when cleaning it too. I use a large-soft make-up blusher brush which 'gently' gets into all nooks & crannies... If you have to wash an item, line the bottom of your sink with a cloth to act as a cushion to protect the glass. Cover the water-taps too! Be extra careful if using foamy washing-up liquid, as once the glass is submerged you may not be able to see it and the slightest movement can roll the item around in the sink.

I use that for my carved items too, I find it is the best way.

... and definitely for any Bronze! Polishing bronze is a no-go.
