I paid way too much for this -- just got into a bidding war and thought it was original painting. Now I think it's just extensively hand-coloured. But is it a dance-card holder and how old do you reckon? Please say "Very old" and "Worth lots". :) I think the party girl might show one picture P1080209.jpg P1080213.jpg P1080210.jpg if loitering hopefully and the other if her dance card was full. The inner envelope is embossed card. The case is thin wood held together with soft, thin leather. It's nicely made but I imagine wasn't used by grand dames or the upper echelons. Thanks.

Nice! Could we see the back?
Could it be Victorian? The blue part suggests that to me.
@Poisonivy may be able to help.

"Very old" and "Worth lots". :):):)

Lovely, Cheers, very charming. It looks 19th century to me. German maybe?
I think the side where the woman is holding the door shut, is to show to suitors she doesn't like.

One of those sites that won't allow copying. It sometimes works if you download the picture in your own photo editor, and then post it here.:snaphappy:

@CheersDears, I love yours....it looks so identical to the two others shown (except for images, of course) ....what determines yours is a dance card and the others are cigar cases???? They are all three beautiful!!!! And all look to be similar vintage..... to me early 1800s?....VERY nice!!!

Well, maybe my dancing girl smoked cigars :) I just assumed, from the pictures on mine, that some wench would be flashing it at a dancehall. Now I see that both the holder and liner expand enough to hold several Dunhills very comfortably, so cigars or cheroots it is. Thanks everyone. 220 euro asking price says I was a bit foolish, but not too much, and it seems to be older than I'd thought, so that's a plus. They are all so similar it's hard to imagine they aren't all from the same source. Hmmm. Thanks again. P1080214.jpg

Yes, just a little bit lazy. But all the photo had to show was that the flat packs open wide enough to hold about 100 dance cards or several cigars. I'm surprised that they are papier mache and are all in such good condition. Perhaps their real purpose is hanging around in cupboards, as this one will be doing.
