My father in law was an antiques collector. He had quite the collection. From Napoleonic era military uniforms to art deco medals. Cast iron door stops to ancient roman currency. It really ran the gamut. My wife's mom asked us to help her figure out what to do with the stuff.

First is to attempt to organize, then to attempt identify, then valuate, then find a buyer.

Don't laugh at the last one - I heard from Nancy Sinatra herself about an item I have. Hmmm... I should post that here.

They're gone. We put them up for auction with Heritage Auctions last year. They were a real pain. Really heavy, really bulky, really fragile. That's why there were one of the first things to go after he passed away.

The real problem with coins is what my father-in-law called "fly speck" collecting. The coins and tokens he had are quite old. The difference of one to another might be that this coin might have a tree with four leaves on a branch, while the same coin next to it might have five leaves on a branch.

Don't even get me started on who decides what condition something is in. I've seen dealers send something to all three houses to get graded and slabbed, and each one comes back with a different grade and the difference between them could mean hundreds of dollars of difference.

What I've got on my desk right now is old stuff too. This particular box has
    seven Connecticut coppers
    four New Jersey coppers
    three Vermont coppers
    two Mass coppers
    three Constellatio nova
    two Fugio cents
    two North American tokens
one 1760/1700 Voce Populi half cent
    one 1794 Franklin Press Token
    one 1788 George III halfpenny

None of them are slabbed. I might have to put them in auction. Some of them are census, some of them seem really nice.
