    I'm with Johnny.
But how do they work as bookends, they are identical?

    American, French, other?
    I know, maybe doorstops.

The deers' shape reminds me of an Indian (subcontinent) padded fabric and embroidered decoration I sometimes use on my Christmas tree.

1920s or 30s, but not bookends - they match, rather than mirror. I'd agree on doorstops.

Antelopes were also very popular in art deco decorative objects.

I would also agree on doorstops. From the rust, the bases look like cast iron, which you would not generally want on a nice shelf near your books.

The base is magnetic so I guess iron, plus all the rust. But why the copperish color patina? Was it plated with copper? 26214E8D-78B7-4961-8D93-FA19A5F58B29.jpeg

Probably not plated or patinated, but might be a lacquer coating that creates that color. Otherwise, it is a good question.

    Hi,
I think it was applied copper color to make the deer stand out more. The two color was a poplar combination of the Art Deco period.

A lot of bookends are identical. When placed at opposite ends of a row of books, one faces in and the other out so appear different.

It seems that a thin copper sheet is on the piece, they are many manners to do it, if you look at the superior corner it is possible to see it as a non totally adherent layer.
