    Hi,
Pewter top on this piece,8"H, maybe Delft? I thought Delft was blue and white but this piece makes me think Delft - I've been looking and not finding a mark like this so I could be wrong. Would this be considered tin glazed?
    any information appreciated
    thanks for looking

CXGirl, my first guess would be Portugal...

Thank-you SBSVC, I'll look in that direction:) would it be the colour or design that leads to you think Portugal? (just trying to learn as I know very little about pottery)

Hello cxgirl - I'll share my thinking process if that will help. I can't give you an answer but several things about this item seem contradictory to me. The pewter mechanism really looks German but nothing else about this piece does. Is there a separate mark on the pewter? I do see items made in France in this color scheme and with somewhat similar decoration but the peacock is throwing me. I think it's a peacock because of the feathers coming out of its head. You don't see many peacocks on French pottery and the mark doesn't look French. I have little experience with either Portuguese or Spanish pottery so can't really comment on that angle. Dutch Delft seems unlikely. The color scheme of red and white is rare and the shape does not appear Dutch. I'm thinking it is some kind of intentional marriage of a German pewter mechanism and an unknown pottery manufacturer. In other words either a German pewter manufacturer commissioned the pottery or the pottery company commissioned the pewter. This is just my thought process and I could very well be completely off-base, but I thought it might give you an idea of what runs through this old grey head when I see a piece like this.

CX, I was thinking Portugal because of the bird imagery. There are lots of Portuguese ceramic things out there with birds & animals, like these:

It occurred to me, after looking at these examples, that yours looks more Italian than Portuguese... Perhaps, check out Deruta, made in Italy.

Thank-you Don! No marks on the pewter anywhere - to me the piece looks odd with the pewter top but I have found others (mostly German) so you could be right. I thought peacock also.
Thank-you SBSVC! Yes, I've been finding quite a few with birds, some very nice pieces out there. Will see what I can find looking at Italian pieces

Design a little exuberant for Portugal. I'd vote Italian. (Thing to remember -- northern Italy is southern Tyrol.)

The form originated in Hanau, Enghalskrug, the color would be unusual for German except on contemporary pieces maybe.

Just to add to the confusion here is another pink piece that I have listed and thought was Delft

That pink is typically Portuguese and I've seen similar wine jugs in tourist pottery shops there.
