    Just read about this metal detector find from Sherwood Forest

    15th century 22k gold ring with a rectangular cut cornered sapphire measuring 9.8mm by 7.85mm.

    Engraved on the sides are figures depicting Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and the infant Christ.

    Its going up for auction at Christies in London 27th Nov.

    Estimate £35k -£50k

    amazing. for the moment it looks too good to be true for me. especially the stone looks as if it was machined on a modern lapping unit.

    It has nothing to do with the type of machine,it is the person using the machine.The type of machine used in the 15th century was still being used well into the 1980's... Jamb peg faceting.

    My OH found a Roman snake ring in our back garden whilst digging out foundations for a wall. It appeared on the end of his pick axe!
