Hey all. I have this dish that my great grandmother gave my grandmother who gave it to me. I'm unsure of what it may be. I've done image searches and everything else to no avail. The local antique dealer has no idea either.

    Any ideas?

Lusterware/lustreware (you'll find it spelled both ways) from Japan.

Does it have any maker's marks on the bottom?

It has a mark but it is unreadable. Looks like a crest of some sort.

Post a picture of it, even if it's barely legible. Get the best focus you can.

Just looked on EBay and didn't find one like it but at most it appears to be worth about $100 (based on the other dishes there) so I don't think I need to worry about adding it to my insurance. It is just going to be a gift to my daughter on her wedding day anyhow but I wanted to know what it was.

    I appreciate the help.

Oh my! That is smeared beyond recognition. It's strange that an antique dealer has never seen Japanese lusterware. It's in every junque shop, household auctions, rummage sales, etc... It's everywhere out there!

I live in a very small town so .. perhaps that is why. They pretty much deal in furniture. The stamp confused them since it is unreadable.

If you google Noritake lusterware celery - you'll see quite a few similar ones ...not sure it'd bring anywhere close to 100 - but it will make a nice gift for sure. It's very pretty!

    Hi,
A lot of older Japan things had the mark on the back blurred or scratched off after the attack on Pearl Harbor. In the early 1970s I had a Japanese friend who went with me to an elderly relatives house. The woman threw away the cup my friend had coffee in. Some people never got over the war.

I am kind of a fan of the Morimura. And have several pieces. not worth a lot but most are beautiful.

I doubt I could even get $25.00 for the one that sold on ebay. No market here at all. I love the art deco pattern lusterware pieces but can't sell any at any price here. Consequently, I have a stash of them at home.

This dish is at least 80 years old. Certainly enough time for 3 additional generations to have been born and grow to adulthood.
