Personally I try not to have too many but when a quality item comes up at a great price I find it hard to resist.

    Your thoughts?

Yes, I have some duplicate Jadite, Chalaine and Delphite depression glassware.
Not saying I got them at a great price though.

Books. When I find a volume of a beloved book I already own, I buy it just to give it a home.

I have a couple here and there, where they were worthwile, or jumped up and bit me.....but many years ago I found a pair of slippers I fell in love with....and without thinking...or with thinking, I bought two pair.
When the 1st pair were almost worn out I remembered...A.Ha !!....there was a box in the closet packed away years ago...& voila....I had a brand new pair of the exact slippers I so loved !!
Since then I've had doubles of my jeans, shorts, shirts, shoes, t-shits , tank tops, & even convinced the wife to buy doubles of her favorite winter boots....twice !

    Just sayin...;):happy::happy:

Does a complete set for 12 of a favorite flatware pattern count as duplicates? I have that much of 3 different patterns! :hilarious: I also have multiple pieces of a number of other patterns, mostly because that's the way they were being sold.

But I also have a second copy of one of my go-to pattern references. The first one cost me $25 on ebay, the second was only $3 at a yard sale. Could not pass that up.

I collect opalescent glass, among other things. Last Summer I came home from the flea market with a nice piece only to find I already had the same piece, same form and color, in my hutch :woot:

if the price/quality are good I will get duplicates, they are great for trading or selling to buy something else.

    Hi,
I have three copies of a signed book. I bought the first one, then found someone who really wanted the book so copy 2 then I lost her address so I have two. Then found another at a yard sale for a buck. So now I have three!!!

Slippers, certainly.....who knows when my favorite kind would be on sale again, so I bought....maybe 5 pairs......
But collectibles, not so much. Though some might look at a group of items and say they are all the same, I'd say they are each unique in their own way.

I've done that too. Went to the coin show and purchased a fairly expensive Seated Half Dollar to only find out I already have one of that year/mint in better condition!

I will purchase duplicates if they are in excellent condition, better than the item they are replacing already in my hoard.

    Books - don't get me started! ! !
Would get so tired of being at the store and wanting to research something only to have the book at home. Or looking at something on the computer here at home, only to have the book at the store.

Then there are the Hazel Atlas white hens - How many do you have?
Bet I have more. They were always only a $1.00 and I couldn't leave them on the shelf.

Is this a trick question? If you only have one, then it isn't a collection. I think you need at least three (or seventeen) before it can be called a collection!!

OK, i am gonna be the odd man out here so no, i do not have any duplicates, not even close.
When it comes to early american furniture they are always one of a kind, unique.

    No duplicates!
Never understood like TR dagger collectors, collecting them by makers...
Only the makers marks ( and some minor details!) are different....

But if you have two or more early american chairs or cameos (or whatever), then you have duplicates, at least to my way of thinking. Of course they aren't identical, since only factory made items will be identical. But it is buying the first one, and studying and understanding what it is, that allows you to see and find similar and hopefully better examples. If you buy one and stop there, it is unlikely that you'll end up with the best example.

UHHHHHHH, NOOOOOOOO, lol. Duplicate = exactly like something else, especially through having been copied.
I have more than one of the same forms, chest of drawers, blanket chests, etc but duplicate means exactly the same to me and that just ain't happening with 17th-18th century furniture.
