Found this in an old Jewelry Box. It is French from WW1 and dated 1916. Some sort of commemorative piece.

  9. Every year on 11/11 I attend the remembrance ceremony at Castelnau-Mognoac which is the largest town near me and they always play 'Verdun' by Michel Sardou. Verdun was appalling and particularly for the French. The medal you have was given to all those Frenchman who fought at Verdun. It may not have a great intrinsic value and, sadly, the last veteran of that battle died in 2005, but any survivor of that ghastly battle was revered in France. France is great. Every monument, wherever it is, no matter how small the town or village, is always kept in pristine condition.

We have taken our high school kids to Belgium and northern France for 30 years. Every small town seems to have a cemetery full of white crosses from fallen soldiers. They honor the graves and are so very friendly to Americans visiting. Not enough of us realize these exist or that the people still appreciate our sacrifices.

Do you see how well maintained this is? Anywhere you go in the small villages of Belgium and northern France there are beautifully kept cemeteries with white crosses where American and British soldiers from WWI are buried.

The Commonwealth ones are also very well cared for, we've a commission does that. Likewise the Canadian and US ones in the UK.
