This thing is exceptionally large 27 in tall w/o the glass ( shade ) and appr 32 with . It’s looks like silver overlay ( although I’m going off my overlay perfume bottles ) The glass seems to actually fit the top , although I would assume something more ornate and pretty would be more aesthetically pleasing…Anyway Any help would be greatly appreciated once again sorry again about the last sideways photo grrrr!

It does look like it may be silver overlay. Most such items are late 19th or early 20th century, similar styles were made in the UK and the USA. They do sometimes have tiny marks on the silver which are really hard to see, so do scrutinise it all over.

Also it would be worth a lot more as a vase rather than a lamp base, so if the fittings come off easily and they haven't butchered it then I'd be turning it back into a vase.

I do not think this started life as a vase. It looks like the neck portion sits on the body.

    Is it white glass?

I see a monogram, this may have been a gift.

    Early 20th century, I'd think.

I think more like circa 1940. The white shade is just a diffuser and is likely original. Would have had a cloth shade over it.

Very nice. Could be silver or nickel. I lean toward silver since it has a monogram. It's missing the large shade (cloth) which would fit atop the glass shade. Looks like it has a three intensity, mogul bulb fitting. I would place it in the 1900-1920 period. The way the components fit together it is not a conversion and I would never convert it to another use. It is a wonderful lamp.

@Gus Tuason Thank you! Where on earth would I find a cloth shade? I thought it looked incomplete but wasn’t sure … I think it’s lovely…

My Mom collected silver deposit (usually called silver overlay now) for years, she would have loved this piece. Personally, also believe it started life as a table lamp, and unless the pics are deceiving, appears to be porcelain rather than glass, possibly a Lenox China blank, would suggest, given the quality of the silver deposit and the engraving, dating to circa 1920s. You can set any shade on top of the diffuser, but without notches in the wire frame it will shift - you can order the correct shades, or what I've done is use a modern shade, center it and put sturdy zip-ties, clipped short, fitted on the wire and hidden inside the diffuser to keep it in place...

If it has a mogul fitting and you can get one of the bulbs at Lowe's or Home Depot. Adapters usually give only one wattage. You can pick up a nice shade at Salvation army, Goodwill, thrift stores. The one you want is one that has notches in the struts (wire frame) which will nestle unto the diffuser (thanks "verybrad"). Some lighting stores carry new and/or restored ones, at a higher price but nice.

Here's a 1920 article that shows different styles of shades:
