Does anyone recognize this German backstamp?

Discussion in 'Pottery, Glass, and Porcelain' started by The Junk Lady's Son, Aug 25, 2022.

  1. I picked up a set of six bowls yesterday, as they were hand painted with a beautiful rose design and are also in great shape. I've been doing a lot of reading this morning about German backstamps, but not one of the images, references and books I can find mentions this particular stamp, which is seemingly very generic.

The stamp is just a red circle with Germany inside it, followed by another circle inside that with the number 75. Other china does have similar marks with other numbers, but the sellers don't have any information to ground their dating.

Based on the appearance, I would guess early 20th century, but the references I could find are a bit ambiguous. (Post-WWII marks tended to be East or West Germany, post-WWI marks used Made in Germany, and anything before that more often had a specific manufacturer or Bavaria.)

The mark is a generic import backstamp and not really useful for identifying a manufacturer. I believe what you have is a set of individual berry bowls. Usually there is a master bowl but it must have been separated from the rest of set or perhaps broken over time. I think you are right on the timeframe - early 20th century between 1900 and 1920 or so when berry sets fell out of fashion.

  3. Thank you, @dgbjwc! This helps narrow it down, as I had hit a dead end on my own. In full transparency, I'll probably end up selling these, but I'm always reluctant to do so if I can't provide at least some tangible information to buyers.

I often ask for assistance on items I intend to sell. Some of us buy and sell to support our pottery and/or glass addiction. :hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

  5. I've been selling off quite a few things in my collection recently, thinking I would bring in a little extra cash. Instead my family has been asking why I keep getting just as many packages as I send... :shame:
