Does the truly original storage case/packaging matter?

Does it make much difference if an antique item accompanies its truly original packaging and/or storage case, or can an identical packaging/storage case from another identical antique item make the pair just as authentic and valuable?

For example, let's say you have an antique mass-produced figurine that is in fair shape and its packaging is in great shape. Then let's say you have an identical antique figurine from a similar production time that is largely indistinguishable except that this one is in fantastic shape but does not include its original packaging.

Would it be appropriate to take the item in fantastic shape and pair it with the packaging from the "fair shape" item, or would that be considered tampering or making the item less authentic and/or less valuable? Would the inclusion of this packaging, albeit from a different but identical item, make the "excellent shape" item even more valuable?

In the antique world, that's called "a marriage."

If nobody can tell it's a swap, who cares?

Some people really do enjoy having the original packaging. Unless the item is in some manner identifiably linked to its original packaging, then it would make no difference to swap one for the other.

especially with toys the original carton inclueded and in good nick can easily double the price. same with watches, high-end jewellery etc.
