    Looks to me like a water pipe as well, but doesn't that mean it should open? (Not something I'd try without knowing more.)

    Not old... Decorative water pipe for tobacco! Though no tobacco nor opium were harmed during the process;)

    Water is placed into the pipe in order to cool the smoke down, in much the same way as hubble-bubbler pipes do. It is a principle used in chemistry/laboratories, like spiral-condensers for example and other scientific instruments.
