I have a chinese Fan that I bought. Wondering if anyone can translate this for me. It's a double sided fan on silk. There's a tag on it that says 1878.

Ask Couchpotatowannabe...we both found our way here when our group decided to move to Facebook. :meh: I told him I was Jonesing for an antique forum and was very excited when I found you all. He just joined. He's pretty good.

Yes it's a black lacquered handle. There's also another marking on the handle that I've never seen before.

I also have 3 other fans that's pretty cool too. The handles along those is either made from bone or ivory.

Not a fan, if you use it as such, the silk will shatter! it is a face screen, called Pien Mien:)

Though I'm not all that confident in an overall accurate translation here. The third character is a little tricky for me to read its strokes clearly and the changing of even one character can alter the resulting total translation quite a bit.

The best translation of the characters may be evident when someone can translate the rest of the writing.

I am much better at translating the neater handwriting, or printed Chinese characters. The more caligraphic or decorative handwriting forms I find extremely hard to recognise.
