    LOL - We cross posted. I thought of it right after I called it a staircase post and went to look up pics. My synapses fire slowly sometimes.

    Not Eastlake but, rather, Renaissance Revival. Circa 1875. You don't give size but a newel post is likely if the right size. This may be missing something from the top. If a newel post, it may have had an additional finial or a newel post lamp attached. Also, if a newel post, you should be able to see where the stair rail was attached to one side. Otherwise if not a newel post, it may have just been a base for displaying a large work of art or even just a plant.

    I thought you were asking about the top piece. The two don't look as though they belong together.

    Look like they belong together to me. The top is darker but maybe it hasn't been cleaned.

    The style is somewhat different. I think the bottom piece is a pedestal and the top piece is from a stairway in a large building like a library or municipal building.

    Does the top have the same marbeling effect?
