Compared to the Asian Art Forum-this Forum seems more user friendly, but I also post here 1000% more than that one !
When you post on AAF- it'll say something like 'submit for edit',hit that button,a new window will pop up-it will say-'posting will take 24 hrs for board to review because of spam, etc', then you'll have to hit 'submit' again, and it'll confirm your posting is pending.
If you don't hit final 'submit', i think it just stays in limbo-correct ?

WOW, sounds tricky! But I bet it really cuts down on trolls though, not that we have a lot here :)

I use AAF...but not often enough to be annoyed by what, as you say, is, a problematic an' kinda retro site.
The deal though is...that's where I. Nagy hangs out! That person has been hugely helpful in translation of text an' signatures on primarily Japanese items for me. I'll put up with a lot of inconvenience for access to that generosity!

Wow. They must have really had an issue with spam and bots because that seems extreme and a lot of work. Or maybe it's a default that eventually gets lifted if you've been there a while? Only for thread starting, or all posts?

I hope there's a team of mods for approval or that would be such a huge amount of work for one or two people to deal with.

Exactamundo mate-competent translation w/ nuanced depth...Googly aint there yet.
*Must Remember I. Nagy-expert translation's like platinum in the labyrinth of Asian antiques !
PS-It's actually not incredibly hard-just new & different.Though we don't seem to get herds of Trolls here with our casual 'open border' policy.
PSS-Yes Mirana, you'd think they'd be spending days weeding out suspicious characters.

Oh man. Better hope your moderator doesn't need a sick day or conversations slow to a crawl! Or if you only have mods in one timezone....

And after all that work, it's all fingers and toes crossed, hoping one of the 2 or 3 really knowledgeable answer you. There are a lot of unanswered questions there...
And when you do get an answer, and want to post a follow-up question or just a thank you note, you have to deal with all those steps again.

Yep-It's definitely not the instant communication we get here.I posted a piece and 3 or 4 days later realized the pics hadn't been included-I knew I was F*** !
I responded to myself w/ the Pics, and stated-'Thanks 12 people who already looked at my query,I forgot the photos-now I'm screwed !!!'.
PS-You know how long the shelf life is in the 'Recent Topics' column is, right ? Over there I figured if I got one response in the next month my batting average would be considered 'Good'.

At the AAF,many interesting (to me) pieces get maybe only 1 or 2 looks, yet the site consistently pops up in Asian Art reference searches. I guess when they do deign to respond-it's really incisive expert info !

And the problem is, that helpful answers have to go through the same process.

I have stopped replying there. Not because of the cumbersome process, but most people can't be bothered to say a simple thank you. So why should I bother? A pity really, because though there are good experts on China and Japan, the other Asian countries seem to be a no man's land on AAF. No one knows anything about Indonesian art, for instance.

Jeez that really bothers me more than it should but people need to have good etiquette! Why would you not thank someone for freely giving you their labor and vast expertise? Saving you a costly appraisal or long time researching? You can't even do proper research on the Internet anymore so it would take books, museums, and handling. But no, you got an answer in a couple days. A bargain. People are so ungrateful. :shifty:

Exactly. They don't have to bow and kiss my hand, but is it really too much to acknowledge the fact that I took time to study their item and reply with the knowledge I have?

It's sad-Someone responds to your question with an insightful answer. The Responders spent decades studying this art form, and potentially have just made you hundreds or thousands of dollars-and you can't say-'Thank You' !
I'd like to get more of their (polite/responsive) experts over here.Of course they'd have to get down off their throne and actually communicate-but even superb scholars can get a kick out of sharing right ?

Your knowledge level's insane-the amount of your life devoted to study floors me,and importantly-you frequently study more before you answer !

That's why I love it here. So many people genuinely obsessed about their favorite arts and excited to share. You stop learning when you're dead.
