This necklace I got today says sterling, the stones feel like glass, are they man made
    goldstone or something else ?

    Thank You 001.JPG 002.JPG 003.JPG

Yep - goldstone for sure. I'm not used to seeing it in 20s/30s jewelry, but it's not a real surprise. Someone may have used older stones from the back of a warehouse or something of the sort.

Interesting piece. Can you get a picture of where it is marked? There might be some clues in that. A picture of the whole necklace would also be a good idea.

Question for you Billy - what makes you say "Edwardian?"

Goldstone is a glass man made stone with gold flecks. It is not a natural stone.

I agree, we need to see the whole piece and the clasp!

I say Edwardian because of the clasp and design

    Looks 1960s - 70s to me.

It will look nicer and sell for a higher price if you polish it.

I get a Czech 1920s feel, but it could be later. I agree that's it's goldstone.

I see nothing to suggest Edwardian, the clasp is the same as a few I have from the 70's

The way that clasp is done, I'd still say 20s into the early 30s. The later ones look a lot different and the construction is 20s/30s. That was visible before the clasp confirmed it. There's a King Tut influence to the dangle, or maybe vague Native American. I'm on the fence about that part, but it points to the same era.

What is distinct about the clasp? I have at least 3 from the 70's with the same wire/pin with a ball end.

Silver clasps of that sort that I had in the
One difference I see is that the little piece that you move as a lever to open and close the clasp is much smaller in this necklace than in the ones I had on necklaces or purchased as findings in the '70s and later. I used to go through Jewelry supply catalogs to order them, and don't recall seeing any having that small a lever.

I'm with Pat and Ruth on this. That's an older spring clasp: I have a great many 20s and 30s necklaces with that same wee lever. They're also, oh, fatter somehow that new ones. The style of the sterling punch, the shape of the dangle, the proper old colour patina is all right. I'd get a Sunshine cloth on that, but NOTHING more.

    I think Art Deco. Lovely.
Spring ring clasps have been around since the 1840s, maybe a bit earlier. The 1921 patent sketch was just for one particular design.

If I had a camera of the 3 in my jewelry I would post a photo, they were bought from Grieger's supply in the mid 70's.The lever is a small "rod" with a ball end.

Exactly! The later ones do have a ball at the end of the lever, while the one here doesn't.

Which is why the earlier ones are such a pig to do up, too.
