I bought this from a blurry pic expecting it to be brass, but it has cleaned up a treat and is silver and carved mother of pearl. There are no marks that I can find (yes I have disassembled it to check) and the acid suggests it's Sterling silver. It's a bit smaller than average at about 10cm across.

I'm having trouble finding similar items to date it, the only one I can find is a sold reference with the period given as William IV, maker Joseph Willmore, but no date letter for confirmation. Hoping to find a bit more evidence for period, any thoughts/links?

Sorry, I'm no help, I'm just wondering how you managed to clean that silver so beautifully?

I should had done a before/after! Disassembled it first, rubbed it gently with silver dip (the acid type) on a cloth to get it to the level I wanted then selectively buffed with Silvo on cloth/qtip as appropriate for the areas I wanted to shine. Most of it is too delicate for the polishing wheel/lathe brush.

    Thank you, great info!
There's a few intricate pieces I'd love to clean up in my collection.

THIS ONE is described simply as c.1900 "Victorian Foreign Silver Chamberstick":

Your snuffer looks like a better match to THIS English 1829 chamberstick:

Many thanks, those are very useful, the one I found is here:

    https://www.bexfield.co.uk/05/g200.htm

It is more elaborate and a nicer piece, although the handle is a match as are the leaf sprigs. It has a makers mark and I've been able to confirm that matches the William IV dating.

So it probably is early 19th, which is not what I was expecting, I would also had thought c1900 originally.

And the snuffer a rose. Could be symbolic for a Dutch-English alliance, maybe a reference to the earlier William and Mary period?
OK, I'm reading too much into it.:hilarious:

Thanks, I don't think it's going to be approaching the price of the one in the link, but as it cost me embarrassingly little it should do nicely.

It will all be good again. There are no hard feelings on our side, except maybe for a few fishermen from Urk, but Urk is considered a separate country anyway.;) Pretty village though.
