Personally not my most favourite type of thing, but I can appreciate the skill and my mother likes it (which makes it cool).

Anyway Iam guessing the possible age. Maybe 1910-1920’s? ( no I idea why I think that) But it looks old. It’s about 68cm x 48cm. The little sticker is just from a moving company.

Thank you for any comments and keep well

Appreciate the comment. I really won’t think 80’s. That back and border stitching makes it look older to me.But Iam most often wrong (so that makes you probably right) I also thought the frame looks ‘newer’ than the art.

The whole scene also looks oriental to me.

If you carefully iron the back, without pressing hard, you could iron out the folds and wrinkles. Once it is presentable again, put it in a nice frame and give it to your mother.:)

I get a 50s vibe, but there was a portrait of my mother, painted in the mid-30s, with a similar frame.

Hi AJ,thank you for the reply and age estimate. Yes,I really did think of making a gift of it (after sorting the frame) But to iron it really never occurred to me. Not so sure I won’t screw it up (ha ha)

Use the lowest ironing setting, it may say silk or have one dot or something like that, depending on the brand.
If you're scared to stuff it up, try ironing with a towel on it first. If that doesn't get out the creases, then iron it gently straight on the back of the embroidery.

To embroider, you can use a frame that pulls the material tight, so you can work it more easily - push the needle through. That could be the reason for the extra material. The underlying material looks like linen to me. It is stained, so it needs to be cleaned before taking out the wrinkles. Do you have a specialty dry cleaner nearby? I have taken moldy silk embroidery for cleaning to a place that does it, and they got out the mold.

Thank you for the reply and advice. I will have to find out regarding a specialist dry cleaner. There’s a dry cleaner business nearby but not sure what services they offer.

That screams fifties to me. I'd dust it well, then maybe gentle spot cleaning.

I can clearly see holes around the edge where it was once tacked to a larger stretcher..

I will throw my hat into the ring: that frame looks 40s/50s to me. It's a nice bit of needlework and could use some TLC to rejuvenate it!
