Sometimes when you start to research autographs you unearth a tragedy.

From an autograph book covering the period 1910-1922

Seymour Hicks later addition is quite moving " a very dear old friend of mine" is written next to Irving's signature.

Irving died trying to rescue his wife, Mabel.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Yes, Hicks was another actor and the book was full of singers, actresses etc.

What chilled me on reading about the Empress was that there were 138 children on board and all but 4 died.

Titanic is the one we all remember but more lives were lost on the Empress of Ireland.
