I purchase older furniture only if it fits my decorating style and it has a practical use. With that in mind, I paid $220 for this end table. It is solid as a rock and in my opinion, offers aesthetic appeal. I searched for a label but found none, only a carved roman numeral 36, which I assume corresponds to the year it was made.

Can someone provide an assessment based on the piece's technical merit (as opposed to aesthetic evaluation)?

    Thanks
    Dan

That is more likely to be a customer or pattern number.

Hi Dan! I like the style very much and I love the drawers for storage. You don't give the size, but it looks "side table" size.

As suggested, the roman numeral is something besides a date. A look at the back, case construction and drawer bottom might help date this. Any screws or nails visible? Any provenance? Any way you look at it, I think your purchase well worth the money.

Nice solid table.....as @judy said side or end table size (?), nice dove tailed drawers, and love the inlay everywhere!!!!!! Looks well worth the $$.....I'd have it if I had room!!!!!:smug::smug::smug:

No provenance, Brad. Just picked up at a local auction. The only evidence of nail that I am seeing, appear to be counterset on the bottom. Everything is solid wood. I attached some additional photo, including an inlay design that may provide guidance to those more knowledgeable than myself.

    Hi Judy. You are correct. It measures 24" x 24" x 16"

What style would you call this?

    The inlay work is wonderful.

Do I see staples and plywood in the second to last picture?

Definitely staples.....on the lower panel only. At the risk of sounding stupid, I am not seeing nor feeling the layering I would expect in plywood though.

Plywood bottom, back, staples, and joinery I see indicate that this is a modern piece. Possibly Asian or Egyptian in origin. Still a very nice well made piece from what I can tell.

As to style, maybe Georgian or French Regency.

The inlay is very much in the Regency style.

I'm with Brad: having seen that construction, it's newish. Also, on an older piece the drawer linings would be MUCH thinner. Handle fixings are new, too.

It's a nice useful thing. My one criticism is I don't like the handles on it. Much too fussy and ornate for the age it's emulating.
