I recently acquired a lovely rosewood Davenport desk from England, and trying to narrow down a date of manufacture based on an inscription on the top lock. After polishing, one can see "Parnell's Patent" on the left side, "52 Strand London" on the right and "National 449" in the center. I found a London Daily News archive from 1855 mentioning a Parnell company at that address; as for "National" I reckon that's a lock type (I found other references to a "Defiance" lock with Parnell Patent), and 449 perhaps a serial number. Would you by chance have any knowledge to share regarding this manufacturer? Photos attached. Many thanks! Davenport lock 2.JPG Davenport1.JPG

Here they are in business at that address in an 1854 issue of The London Gazette.

Excellent, thanks for that @Debora ! Parnell and Puckridge, will dig further ... I find that they exhibited locks at the 1855 Paris Exhibition under "Engineering and Industrial products". Also found listed as an exhibitor at the Crystal Palace in London in an 1854 guidebook.

Stunning piece, and a mid-1850s date would be spot-on. Gorgeous!

We have one up in the attic that's falling apart. Dang! I wish it looked like this.

Hubby doesn't recognize the brand. The only Parnell Defiance lock I see is a padlock.
