IMG_8945.jpeg IMG_8946.jpeg IMG_8948.jpeg IMG_8949.jpeg Hi everyone! I found this beautiful cameo necklace and am trying to date it. It’s got no signature, and I’m not sure the metal… perhaps copper bc it’s turning green in some places? Would love your input!! It’s roughly a dime-nickel size.

There, that's better. She is genuinely carved shell & not the resin piece I was expecting from the thumbnails. I'd say a late iteration of a type that developed in the 1930s & carried on into the 50s. This is from the later end of the range.

The metal is probably brass You should remove any patches of verdigris as they may spread. I'd probably use a jewellery wipe applied vigorously rather than work with any liquid, such as vinegar that might get on the cameo & mar the surface, although you could try ketchup dabbed on. (Think mustard would work as well or better. For some reason we always recommend ketchup around here.) Be careful rinsing off. Water won't hurt the cameo, but could get trapped under it & cause problems down the line.

we always recommend ketchup around here.
    it's the citric acid.........
my Dad and his war time buddies...all used flat cola on their brass..!!!

just to cover all the acids...
The natural acid in tomato is oxalis acid, but vinegar or acetic acid is also added as a preservative while preparing the tomato sauce or ketchup. This increases the shelf life and also enhances the taste.

Wow! I’m so impressed by everyone’s knowledge!! Thank you for taking the time to share your insight. Does anyone have a range of what this cameo might be worth? Thank you again!

We don't really do values here as there are too many unknowns.
If u can find very similar items online or in auction catalogs .....that may help u to a fair market price ..:)
