Mouth maybe too large and no where to hold it if it is a decanter? I vote for vase.

Why don't you think it is old?
I think Pre WWI maybe earlier, no later than 1930s.

That's a very nice polished pontil base.

Will have to do some looking, I'm thinking this area may have had a metal ring. Just not sure for what purpose. No pour spout so not a carafe.

The only ruby cut to clear I have found with metal on it were Martini shakers.

I do not think that this is one, because of the shape of the base.

Still lovely. Better detail than most.

It does look like a cocktail shaker to me, and it is the right size. I'd gladly trade my silver one for a (gin) martini from that one....................

Vase, engraved, not etched, skillfully hand done, not mass produced etched.

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

But it LOOKS like it should have had some sort of sterling lid.............

I suspect it had a glass lid.
