Don't know if the mount and the lid are original or later addition.
Any idea of the origin, maker, age etc...
    Thanks

How big is it? Seems odd to have a notch on the lid.

About 10 1/2" to the rim.

From the appearance of the first photo, I have a feeling the notch is for a ladle but was cut out after the fact of the manufacturing, hard to tell from the photos though.

Is there a hallmark on the cover? I agree notch looks unusual. Nice glass and decoration. I am thinking Europe early 1900's.

I can't tell if the notch was cut later. But it is possible the lid is not original. Not finding any marks but I'll double check.
The bowl, jar, whatever it is has a strange shape. What was meant to be used for?

I usually expect something with such a narrow base (versus the wide bulbous body) to being meant as an insert into a base - like on many castor frames and their various "bottles." Does it look like the outside of the glass in that area has abrasions from going in and out of such?

The base has a lot of scratches so it was staying on its own for some time. It is possible at some point it was inserted into a base. Have you seen a large piece like this in a castor frame?

No I haven't. Didn't mean to suggest that I had. That was just the best comparison I could think of in shape terms.

I do think it makes sense that this did have some kind of base, though.

I can't tell from the photos if the work on that lid matches that on the rim, but they did make lidded punch bowls in this general shape - and some also were fitted in a metal base as Bakersgma suggested.

The lid looks art nouveaux while the glass looks to have a newer pattern cut into it. It could definitely be a different lid married to that glass.

The etch is blackberries in fruit and blossom. Lid looks like freesias, so they may well be unrelated.

Thanks for the blackberries hint. The only such I found are on Cambridge jar but only the fruit and leaves, no blossoms.
The lid and the rim band could be a marriage. Are those cattails on the rim? And maybe lilies?

    Nope, freesias and anemones.
