Grabbed this in Harrogate. I thought it was silver overlay at first but it stayed dull after polishing. It looks like graphite. I'm thinking maybe Japanese or Czech or anything in between. Hedging my bets...

    where might it be from?

Can't help much but to say I see no etching. It looks like silver deposit (silver overlay is heavier silver contoured to the shape of the glass) but you said it didn't shine up

Did you hold it up to bright light or sunlight? It may be black amethyst glass.

would look stunning if that overlay polished up. i would have sworn it was.

almost looks as if its not quite on the surface, as the shine seems to be all over

Thanks for clarification. I thought it was all one and the same thing. I've never heard of amethyst glass but I guess this confirms it. Maybe the layer is a base layer and there were other colours on top of it? Or maybe that was the intended finish?

Not a base layer, it's the color of the glass throughout :)

The floral pattern looks like it is lead or something. There are small blobs of it in areas. When I polish it with metal polish and a tissue, the tissue turns a dirty black colour. Gonna leave alone before there's nothing left.
