Ethiopian wooden carved figure

    I have this figure that was purchased from Ethiopia about 45 years ago.

    I was looking to see what kind of wood and what was used for the hair.

    Also, the "hair" is getting very fragile. I am looking for suggestions to best preserve and/or restore.

    Can you tell if the hair is (was) attached to a hide? It is difficult to tell from the photo. My first impression, from the way the individual hairs are coming loose, is that there may have been some carpet beetle grazing along the surface. Or sometimes pelts that have been only marginally tanned will simply lose their hair as they age. (Don't we all?)

    Hmm, I will take a closer look and try to get a better photo.
