My first ever post on Antiquers was a question about this carved plaque, I had been trying to find out more about it for years but nobody knew anything. It came to the point the other day where I submitted photos to Sotheby's in a vain hope they would know what it was and put it in to their auction. I received a message back from Sotheby's with no more information than it wasn't something they wanted undeterred I returned to my endless search when I had a breakthrough I was looking through Venetian museums when I stumbled on a carved picture frame by Luigi Frullini who just happened to be working at the same time as the guy who carved my plaque and often they are mentioned together in the same articles. I am now convinced this plaque was carved by Pietro Giusti, he is a well known Italian carver who has his work in the Met in New York and in the V&A in London. Here are some links to his work, it would be nice for you kind folks to give me your opinion, if you think it's by the same artist and what kind of value it may have. https://www.metmuseum.org/toah/works-of-art/1998.19/ http://www.eurodecart.com/european-ivories-19c/siena-primavera-wall-plaque https://i.pinimg.com/originals/d7/3c/ed/d73cedae2bd72c77b24f610940863896.jpg http://collections.vam.ac.uk/item/O368769/frame-frame/
Fantastic, raver. It is a stunning piece, great research, and it looks like you're right. Thank you for the update, I'm glad I can see it now, I missed it the first time around. For others who missed it, here is the thread: https://www.antiquers.com/threads/carved-oval-wooden-and-bronze-plaque.17193/ What do they want? Some auction houses....
Let us know when it finally goes up for sale, I’ll bid, got a few feet of wall space left between a Rembrandt and a Van Gogh. What a liar I am!
It's been pushed around the house for years, I'm too afraid to hang it on the wall because of it weight. I'll be glad to get shot of it if the moneys good as I need a new bathroom (nothing special, a few grand will do )
I found this auction result...Yours is better piece!! https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/47269139_a-fine-and-rare-19th-century-italian-carved-walnut
Sorry now I see the bidding got up to £3800, I don't know if that was the final price but that's very reassuring
Even though this piece is way too fussy for me, I think I would still have to hang it someplace. It is way too beautiful not to be looked at & enjoyed on a daily basis. JMHO The intricacies of the carving & the beauty of the wood showing through is just absolutely phenomenal.
I should have hung it up but I have made my picture hangers out of stiff wire and I didn't trust them with the weight of the carving, they are fine for the light modern frame and glass less pictures I have.
Hi, Love the piece. I would put it in a shadow box which would have a better backing, so not to worry so much. greg
That's a good idea, if I hadn't walls that are lath plaster where the plaster has been skimmed but behind the skim it turns to dust. Screwing into the walls has to be done with long enough raw plug (5 inches) to go past the skim, through the lath and plaster, past the gap and into the brickwork enough so it doesn't rest of the plaster.
Thank you, Any kindly posted a link to the original post at the top f the thread https://www.antiquers.com/threads/carved-oval-wooden-and-bronze-plaque.17193/
https://books.google.com/books?id=c...hUKEwjSlrSa0pLbAhUN8mMKHdK2DbYQ6AEwD3oECAYQAQ Found a reference of E.A. Colquhoun. Maybe more research will help your value.
I have tried going down the E A Colquhoun route but unless I can find sales records for Pietro Giusti I doubt it will help, there is (maybe) a auction label on the back but half of it has been removed. I think the best bet is to contact the V&A and see if they will confirm it is by Pietro Giusti, once I have that then I'll see if a top auction house want's it then.
